Life History

Like neotropical boas, these snakes shelter in mammal burrows, fallen logs, piles of debris, and other protected sites. They hibernate duringthe dry, cool months, normally May through July. The snakes mate shortly after emerging from hibernation. After a six to eight month gestation, small litters of two to twenty-one young are born live. At birth the young are 19 to 24 inches to two feet long. Lifespan about 15-20+ years.

Special Adaptations

  • Cryptic coloration helps the snake remain inconspicuous
  • Special organ in the snake's mouth distinguish smell from the particles collected by the snake's tongue, aiding the snake in locating prey
